A Safe Start: Heero’s Journey with GROAD

Heero’s journey with GROAD is a testament to resilience, support, and unwavering human kindness. When life became overwhelmingly difficult, she discovered in GROAD not just a helping hand, but a family. “I have great appreciation for this organisation that really helped me a lot. I don’t know how to thank them,” she recalls, her voice filled with gratitude.

From the very first day, Andrea, Founder and Director of GROAD, made Heero feel seen and supported. “As soon as I said I wanted to work with them as a volunteer, she was thrilled and started talking to me about their mission and values, and about the transportation systems. She cared about what I ate during work. She allowed me to take clothes and things I needed for my daughters and myself,” Heero shares. Andrea’s care went far beyond the ordinary: she even bought Heero’s younger daughter a new school bag, gifted Heero a laptop, and provided weekly transportation money to ensure she could keep moving forward.

Even during moments of personal hardship, Heero experienced unwavering support. After a car accident left her with a broken leg, she asked Andrea for travel bags, but Andrea went above and beyond, bringing six to eight bags without hesitation. “She is more than a kind, generous, and wonderful person. I would love to work with her all my life because she was with me in the difficult days,” Heero says, reflecting on the profound impact of GROAD’s compassionate support.

Through acts of generosity, patience, and care, GROAD transformed Heero’s life. Her story is a powerful reminder of the organization’s mission: to lift people up not just with resources, but with empathy and humanity. For supporters and donors, Heero’s journey illustrates the tangible, life-changing impact GROAD makes every day, one person at a time.

Ebrahim’s Story: From Asylum Seeker to Volunteer

When Ebrahim arrived in the UK seeking asylum, life was filled with uncertainty. With no stable income and limited resources, even basic necessities became difficult to manage. It was during this challenging time that he connected with GROAD (Get Rid of and Donate) and met Andrea.

Andrea and the GROAD team not only offered him essential support, such as clothing and other necessities, but also extended something even more valuable: an opportunity. Ebrahim was invited to join as a volunteer, giving him a sense of purpose and belonging at a time when he needed it most.

“During the difficult time of my asylum, you stood by me with kindness and generosity. The chance you gave me to work with you as a volunteer was a very valuable experience for me, and it helped me a lot emotionally and personally. I will never forget your kindness.” — Ebrahim

Through volunteering, Ebrahim gained confidence, emotional strength, and valuable experience that helped him navigate his new life. What began as a period of hardship turned into a journey of resilience, connection, and hope, showing the powerful impact of community and compassion.

Today, Ebrahim’s story is a testament to how small acts of kindness can transform lives. His gratitude reflects the mission at GROAD: standing beside people when they need it most and empowering them to build brighter futures.
