Standards and Guidelines

Wherever possible, we aim to align with the Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG) 2.1 at the AA level. These guidelines help us ensure:

  • Perceivable content - text alternatives for images, clear and readable fonts, sufficient contrast.

  • Operable interface - keyboard navigation, intuitive focus, and avoidance of flashing content.

  • Understandable content - plain language, meaningful headings, and consistent structure.

  • Robust compatibility - with modern browsers, assistive technologies, and mobile devices.

Features We Provide

  • Alt text for images, including donation items, drop-off locations, and project visuals.

  • Structured headings and semantic HTML to aid navigation.

  • Resizable text and high contrast options to improve readability.

  • Accessible forms, such as donation drop-off signup or contact inquiries, clearly labeled and keyboard-friendly.

  • Keyboard navigation, enabling operation of menus, buttons, and links without a mouse.

  • Clear language, ensuring that donation guidelines, hub closure notices, and other key information are easily understandable.

Known Issues and Workarounds

Though we strive for full accessibility, there may be limitations, such as:

  • Occasionally, decorative or complex images may lack alt text.

  • Older PDFs or legacy documents may not be fully accessible.

  • Some third-party embedded content (e.g. from social media, WhatsApp) may not support all assistive technologies.

Workaround: If you encounter any such barriers on the site, please contact us, we will provide the information in an accessible format.

Ongoing Improvements

Accessibility is an ongoing effort. We regularly:

  • Review site updates and newly added content (like donation drives for Ukraine Refugees UK, donation “wanted” lists, community hub notices) for compliance.

  • Conduct periodic audits and user testing, collaborating with accessibility experts and community members.

  • Train team members and volunteers to prioritize accessibility during content creation and web maintenance.
